Thanks to social media, connecting with the people who are eager to buy from and do business with you has never been easier. And the first step is to identify who your ideal customer or client really is, and how your products, services and business can benefit them.
You may have heard the phrase, “find your niche” or… maybe you say niche. I like to say the riches are in the niches, so I usually say niche.
People overcomplicate this, but at its core your niche is extremely simple: It’s who you help, and how you help them.
Identifying your niche is like building a strong foundation for your home. It’s the first step! Once you know your niche, every other aspect of your business starts to fall in to place: from creating content, to having conversations, to closing sales. So let’s talk about how to do it:
Finding Your Target Audience | Start With Past & Current Customers:
First, Look at your current and past customers. Grab a sheet of paper, or open up a spreadsheet and ask yourself:
What do they have in common? What problems were they looking to solve when they finally said YES and became a customer, client or team member? Look for common characteristics like age, gender, occupation, income, as well as their hobbies, lifestyle, attitude and values.
Are they Mom’s? Are they young professionals? Are they women between the ages of 25 and 35? Where do they live? What do they like to do for fun? What problems or pain points keep them up at night?
Once you have this information gathered, it’s time to turn your attention to others who have similar products, service and business as you, and identify the type of client or customer THEY are targeting.
Finding Your Target Audience | Check Out Your Competitors
A simple way to do this is to jump on to Facebook or Instagram. Think of 5 leaders in your space who are crushing it online. These are likely people you already follow or look up to!
Take a few minutes to scroll through and click around on their content. Pay attention to who they are talking to, and who is liking & commenting on their posts. Who is their primary audience? What problems are they looking to this person to solve? What are they saying when they engage with this person’s content? Pay particular attention to recurring themes you see both in these leaders content, and in the comment section.
Finding Your Target Audience | Think BENEFITS, Not Features
This third step is our favorite. Particularly because it works even if you’re brand new and don’t even have your first client or customer yet.
Open up a new tab on your spreadsheet, or grab a piece of paper and divide it into 4 columns. Column 1 will be products. Column 2 is features, column 3 is benefits, and column 4 is benefits of the benefits.
In the first column do a brain dump of all your products. This may only be one or two, or you may have several. If you are affiliated with a company that has a large product line, focus on the 3-5 products you are most interested in promoting.
Next to each product, you’re going to write out the features & benefits. Features are what product or service IS… a benefit is what it does, and the positive impact it will have on your customer.
Here’s a little tip: people buy benefits, not features. They don’t care about what your products or servies have, until they know what they can do for them.
It’s important to know the features of your products and services, but it’s essential that you know how to highlight the benefits. Once you know those, take it a level deeper and describe the benefits of the benefits.
When someone invests in your product or service… what will they do that they can’t do now? What will they have, that they don’t have now? What will their average day look like? How will they see themselves, and how will others see them?

Finding Your Target Audience | Niching Down
Now that you’ve collected all of your data, it’s time to narrow it all down to 2 simple things: who you help, and how you help them.
THIS is your niche.
Looking at all the things you wrote down… WHO IS your ideal customer or client, and what problems do you help them solve?
Do you help Mom’s lose the baby weight WHILE feeling confident in their own skin?
Do you help women in their 50s navigate the hormonal changes that come with getting older?
Do you help young professionals ditch the 9-5 and start an online business so they can live life on their own terms?
Once you think you have it… niche down even further. As your business and audience grows, your niche can become bigger… but the more you can niche down in the beginning, the better off you’ll be and the faster you’ll grow.
Don’t just give music lessons…. Give guitar lessons. Don’t just give guitar lessons… give acoustic guitar lessons. Don’t just teach anyone… give acoustic guitar lessons to elementary age kids.
Knowing your niche is the first step in our trademark Freedom Focused Profit System — in order to grow a successful business online, you need to be able to attract, capture, nurture, convert and upgrade your audience.
